Getting started with Moodle? Here is our list of recommended tools to help you build and manage your course effectively. These features provide a solid foundation for content sharing, student engagement, and assessment. Whether you're organizing materials, facilitating discussions, or setting up assessments, these tools will support you in creating a structured and interactive learning experience.

Built-In Moodle Tools

Built-in tools are features that come pre-installed with Moodle. All aspects of these tools, including instructor setup, take place within Moodle. These tools provide the basic functions needed to facilitate administrative and instructional tasks for your course.

This feature enables instructors to collect, grade, and provide feedback on student work. Students can submit a variety of digital content, such as files, text, or media. It integrates seamlessly with Moodle's Gradebook, allowing instructors to efficiently manage grading and provide detailed feedback.

Attendance

This is a tracking tool that enables instructors to record and monitor student attendance for face-to-face or online sessions. It provides various attendance statuses and can automatically calculate attendance grades based on customizable settings.

Forum

A forum is interactive discussion space where students and instructors can engage in asynchronous conversations and to share posts, which can include text, audio, video, images, and other files. Forums can be used for a variety of educational activities, such as discussions, debates, peer support, and collaborative activities.

Page

A page is a simple resource that allows instructors to create a single web page within their course using the text editor. Pages can display text, images, video, sound, links, and embedded code, making them ideal for presenting information or instructions.

Quiz

Moodle's Quiz tool is designed for creating and administering quizzes and tests within the platform. It supports multiple question types, including multiple-choice, true/false, and essay questions. The tool provides options for automatic grading, setting time limits, and providing feedback. Although quizzes are traditionally used to assess students, they can also be used to facilitate informal practice activities.

URL

This feature provides a quick way to link to external websites and online resources within your course. By linking to external content, instructors can supplement course materials with relevant articles, videos, research databases, and other web-based resources without requiring students to navigate away from the Moodle platform, creating a more cohesive learning experience.

Text and media area

This feature is a basic content block that allows instructors to add text, images, and multimedia directly to their course page. It's useful for displaying textual information, section descriptions, or embedded media without creating a separate resource.

Third-Party Integrations

Third-Party Integrations involve external tools that can be connected to Moodle to enhance its capabilities. These integrations may require additional setup outside of Moodle or the use of separate software products. Integrating these tools with Moodle provides a streamlined experience for both instructors and students.

EdPuzzle

EdPuzzle is an interactive video platform that enables instructors to enhance videos with questions, notes, and voice-overs. It also tracks student engagement and comprehension, making it a valuable tool for flipped classrooms and video-based learning. Research indicates that students often do not watch videos assigned by their instructors. Using EdPuzzle can increase accountability and make video content more interactive and engaging.

Padlet

Padlet is a digital bulletin board tool that enables collaborative content sharing and discussion. Students and instructors can post text, images, videos, and links, to a shared board making it ideal for brainstorming, collecting resources, or creating collaborative displays.
