Enabling Student Audio and Video in Assignments, Forums, and Quizzes

Updated on

If you want your students to submit long videos, it's best to set up a Google Assignment.  But for shorter assignments, you can make use of Moodle's built-in audio and video recording capability.  This capability can also be used in forums, so students can share audio and video responses to one another.  You can even have students record audio and video in the context of a quiz.

What the students see

In nearly every case, all users (students and faculty) have the option to record audio or video to enter into a text box using the buttons highlighted below.  The purpose of this tutorial is to show how to set up assignments, forums, and quizzes to allow students to have this option.

Assignments

By default, students complete assignments by uploading files.  To give them the option of recording directly into Moodle, uncheck File submissions and check Online text in the "Submission types" section of the assignment's settings screen.

Forums

Typically, when students click Reply to respond to your post or a peer's post, they're presented with the simple interface pictured below.  However, clicking Advanced will bring up a more robust interface that allows students access to the recording options described above.

Quizzes

If you want students to submit audio or video answers in a quiz, you can add an Essay question.  While typically used for written answers, this question type can also present students with the recording options described above.  First, create your quiz and set up any availability windows and time limits you want to impose (covered in another tutorial).  Then:

  1. On the page for the quiz, select the Questions tab
  2. On the right side of the screen click Add and then choose + a new question
  3. Choose to add an Essay question
  4. After entering your question in the Question text box, find the Response Options section and set "Response format" to HTML editor with file picker.

Now, when your students get to that question, they'll have the option to record audio or video for their responses.
