Creating Quizzes with Questions Randomly Selected from a Pool of Questions

Using The Random Question function in Moodle, you can create a quiz that contains questions that are randomly assigned to each student. This can be done with one question, or with multiple questions.

Create a Moodle Quiz

Start by creating a new Moodle quiz.  If you already have an existing Moodle quiz, you can skip to Step 4 by accessing the Edit Quiz page for the existing quiz.

1. Click "Add an activity or resource" and select "Quiz"

2. Enter the quiz information, then scroll down and click "Save and display"

Add a Random Question

When adding a random question to a quiz, you are inserting a placeholder for a question that will be randomly selected from the associated question category.  

3. Click on the "Edit quiz" button

4. Click "Add" > "A random question"

5. Select the "New category" tab

6. Enter a name for the category

This will be the grouping for the questions that will be selected from. The name is up to you, but it is suggested that you use something meaningful like "Question 1 Options"

7. Using the dropdown for Parent category select "Top for <name of quiz you are editing>" (this should be the default option)

8. Click "Create category and add random question"

9. The random item question placeholder will appear. &nbsp;Click "See questions"

Create the Questions

Quiz questions for random questions are created in the same way as any other Moodle question.  They are grouped into the question category associated with the random question.

10. Click "Create a new question"

11. Enter the question information and click "Save changes"

Enter the question information as you normally would.  It is recommended that for the question name, you use a convention to help manage the organization of the questions (e.g. Exam 2 Q1 A, Exam 2 Q1 B, etc.).

12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for each version of the question

As each question is added, it will be displayed in the list of questions for the category.

13. When you are finished adding questions for the current category you return to the Edit quiz page make additional edits to the quiz

Click on the quiz name in the breadcrumb links at the top.  Then, click on the gear menu and select Edit Quiz.

14. Repeat steps 4-12 for each randomized question on the exam
