Embedding content into Moodle allows you to find external resources like videos and have them appear in your Moodle course, rather than sending students to some external site. Embedding requires that you find an embed code for that content. Much like a URL (e.g., www.manhattan.edu) tells you where to find content on the web (e.g., the Manhattan College website), an embed code tells Moodle where to find the content that you want embedded. Once you have the embed code for the content you want to embed, you need only copy that code and paste it into the appropriate place on Moodle to embed the content. This tutorial is will explain the embedding process using YouTube as an example, then explain the process for Google Drive videos, and then offer advice on embedding content from other sources.
Find Embed Code
Embedding a YouTube video is straightforward, and a great way to illustrate the embedding process in general. The first step is to find the embed code for the video. To do this:
- Navigate to the video's page on YouTube and click the Share button.
- Choose the Embed option from the window that comes up.
- Copy the embed code to your clipboard. This is the code you'll paste into Moodle to embed the video.
Create page
The next step is to create a page in your Moodle course where the content will be embedded. Make sure that editing is turned on by clicking the Edit mode toggle in the upper right corner of your course page. Scroll to the desired Topic or Week, and at the bottom of that section click Add an activity or resource. In the window that appears, select Page from the list of options.
Add embed code to page
Before entering the embed code, add a title for your page in the Name field. This is the text that will appear on your course page. You also have the option to enter a Description and check the Display description on course page box to provide a short note to appear on the course page; e.g., "Read this page before class."
To add the embed code:
- Click on the Tools menu and select Source code. This ensures that the editor realizes you're pasting code.
- The Source code pop-up will appear. Paste the embed code. Then click Save.
When finished, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save and display button to view the page as your students will view it, or click the Save and return to course button.
Embedding Google Drive Videos
Many instructors create original videos for their courses, and Google Drive is the easiest way to share those videos with students.
Setting up sharing
Before beginning the embedding process, first make sure that your video's sharing settings are correct:
- Find your video on drive.manhattan.edu, right-click on it and choose Share
- Set the sharing to Anyone with the link
Finding the embed code
To find the embed code for your video, first find your video on drive.manhattan.edu and double-click on it to start playing it. Than:
- Click the three dots in the upper-right corner to open the menu and choose Open in a new window
- When the video opens in a new window, click the three dots again and this time choose Embed item...
- A window will pop up with the embed code that you can then paste into a new page, following the directions above
Other Examples
Many websites offer ways to embed their content. Embed codes generally look the same, there are a variety of ways to access them. Below are a few examples to give you some idea of what to look for:
News story
Embedding this news story required clicking the sharing icon in the upper-right corner, which brought up a window listing the embed code and offering a button to copy that code to the clipboard.
Coggle
Coggle offers a Share this Coggle button, which brings up a window where you can click the Embed button to display the embed code.
Podcast episode
The website for this podcast offers a link directly to the embed code.
