Embedding Videos and Other Content into Moodle

Updated on

Embedding lets you display external content, such as videos, directly inside your Moodle course instead of sending students to another website. The embedding process has two parts: getting an embed code from a website and adding that code to Moodle using the HTML editor.

This tutorial first explains how to add an embed code to Moodle, then shows how to get embed codes from sources like OneDrive and YouTube.

  1. Adding Embedded Content to Moodle
  2. Embedding OneDrive Videos
  3. Embedding YouTube Videos
  4. Embedding Other Content

1. Adding Embedded Content to Moodle

Many websites provide an embed code that allows you to display their content, such as videos, directly inside your Moodle course. Later sections of this guide explain how to find embed codes from sources like YouTube and OneDrive. This section explains how to add that code to Moodle once you have it.

Create page

First, create a page in your Moodle course where the content will be embedded.

Make sure editing is turned on by clicking the Edit mode toggle in the upper right corner of your course page. Scroll to the desired Topic or Week, and at the bottom of that section click Add an activity or resource. In the window that appears, select Page from the list of options.

Add embed code to page

After you obtain an embed code (explained in the next sections), you will add that code to your Moodle page.

Before adding the code, enter a title for your page in the Name field. This is the text students will click on in your course to view the embedded content. To add the embed code:

  1. In the Page content field click on the Tools menu in the toolbar and select Source code. This lets the editor know you're pasting code.
  2. The Source code pop-up will appear. Paste the embed code.  Then click Save.

When finished, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save and display button to view the page as your students will view it, or click the Save and return to course button.

Embedding within a page is the recommended method for posting a stand-alone video, but the same steps can be used to embed videos anywhere the HTML editor appears in Moodle. For example, you can embed videos in assignment directions, quiz questions, or discussion posts.

2. Embedding OneDrive Videos

Many instructors create original videos for their courses. Using OneDrive or SharePoint is the easiest way to store these videos and make them available to students within Moodle. Follow these steps to update share settings and obtain an embed code for a OneDrive video.

Set Up Sharing for the Video

Before embedding a video, you must ensure that its sharing settings allow student access. Locate your video in OneDrive and click on it to open the video.

  1. In the upper right corner of the video, click Share
  2. Select Share again. Do not select Embed just yet - videos must be shared before they can be embedded.

Click the gear icon to open link settings.

Set the following options:

  1. The link works for: Anyone
  2. More settings: Can view

Then, click Apply to save the settings.

These settings ensure that students can view the video without needing to log in separately or request access.

Copy the Embed Code

Close the sharing settings window to return to the main video screen.

  1. Click Share again.
  2. Select Embed code.

Click Copy embed code to copy the code to your clipboard. Then follow the steps in Section 1: Adding Embedded Content to Moodle to add the content to your course.

3. Embedding YouTube Videos

YouTube provides an embed code that allows you to display a video directly inside your Moodle course. This section explains how to get that embed code.

  1. Navigate to the video's page on YouTube and click the Share button.
  2. In the window that appears, select Embed.
  3. A box will appear showing the embed code. Click Copy to copy the code to your clipboard.

After copying the embed code, return to Section 1: Adding Embedded Content to Moodle and follow the steps there to add the code to your course.

4. Embedding Other Content

Many websites provide embed codes that let you display their content directly in Moodle. While embed codes often look similar, the steps for finding them vary by site. Below are a few examples to help you recognize where to locate an embed code.

News story

Embedding this news story required clicking the sharing icon in the upper-right corner, which brought up a window listing the embed code and offering a button to copy that code to the clipboard.

Coggle

Coggle offers a Share this Coggle button, which brings up a window where you can click the Embed button to display the embed code.

Podcast episode

The website for this podcast offers a link directly to the embed code.
