When creating an assignment, you set up a due date. For quizzes, you set up times when it opens and closes. However, there are situations when you might want a student or group of students to submit an assignment at a different time, or to take a quiz at a different time; for example:
- A student may be allowed extra time to take quizzes as an accommodation
- You may grant a sick student an extension to submit an assignment later
- You may have a group assignment where each group has a different due date for submitting the assignment
Changing the settings of an assignment or quiz for one or more students is accomplished with an override in Moodle.
Accessing the override menus for assignments and quizzes are the same: Click the More tab and choose Overrides.
The screen that comes up will list any existing overrides. To add a new one, first choose whether you want to add a user override or group override, and click the button.
To add a group override, you must already have groups defined in your course. See our Groups in Moodle tutorial for more details.
Assignment Overrides
- Use the Override user field to choose the student you're giving an override to
- Select any of the available options to override them for the student. Note that you should only be changing the settings that ought to be different for this student. For example, suppose you set up an assignment due on a Tuesday with a time limit of 60 minutes. You want to allow a student to submit the assignment on Wednesday, but still have 60 minutes to complete it. On this screen, you would change the Due date field but leave the Time limit field as-is.
- Click the Save or Save and enter another override button.
Quiz Overrides
- Use the Override user field to choose the student you're giving an override to
- Select any of the available options to override them for the student. Note that you should only be changing the settings that ought to be different for this student. For example, suppose you set up quiz that's available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on a given day, and the students must complete it in 30 minutes. You want to allow a student to have 60 minutes to complete it. On this screen, you would change the Time limit field but leave the Open the quiz and Close the quiz fields as-is.
- Click the Save or Save and enter another override button.
