Giving Students Extended Time on Quizzes

Updated on

When creating a quiz, you set up times when it opens and closes.  You may also set a time limit for students to complete the quiz.  If a student is allowed extra time to take quizzes as an accommodation, you'll need to set up an override in Moodle, which will allow the student to take the quiz with different settings.

Go to the landing page for the quiz by clicking the name of the quiz on your course page.  Click the More tab and choose Overrides.

The screen that comes up will list any existing overrides.  To add a new one, choose User overrides from the drop-down menu and click the Add user override button.

On the next screen:

  1. Use the Override user field to choose the student you're giving an override to
  2. Select any of the available options to override them for the student.  Note that you should only be changing the settings that ought to be different for this student.  For example, suppose you already set up the quiz to be available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on a given day, and you set a time limit so the students must complete it in 60 minutes.  If a student required 90 minutes to complete the quiz, you would change the Time limit field but leave the Open the quiz and Close the quiz fields as-is.
  3. Click the Save or Save and enter another override button.
