Template User Guide

Updated on

The Course Template contains a variety of premade elements that you can customize and use to help organize your course. This tutorial outlines the steps you should complete to customize the template and prepare your Moodle course site for students.

About the template

Review the template content to determine what customizations are needed. Many of the elements in the top section of the template contain boilerplate language that you should review and update to be consistent with your syllabus and teaching practices.

You will notice that many of the items from the template are set to hidden. This is to help ensure that all items from the template have been reviewed and updated before they are visible to students.

Getting started

To begin customizing the template and adding content to your course, first turn editing on. To do this, click the Edit mode toggle in the upper right corner of the screen.

Edit the course header

Update the course header by entering your name, email address and phone number. To edit the header, select Edit settings from the three-dot menu to the right of the header.  In the editor, replace the current placeholder text as needed and then scroll down and save.

Upload your syllabus

Create your syllabus using the Manhattan University Syllabus Template.  Then upload your syllabus under the Syllabus & Course Information header to make it easy for students to find. When adding a syllabus, we recommend using PDF format rather than Word or some other format.  Using a PDF ensures that students will he syllabus within their browser, without needing to download it.  upload your syllabus following the instructions in our tutorial on adding files.

Customize Getting Started page

Instructions to students on what they should do when they first access the course is listed in the Getting Started page, which is found in the course header. To customize the information on this page, make sure you're in Edit Mode, and then select Edit settings from the three-dot menu to the right of the page's title.  Use the textbox to update the pre-populated information as desired.  Then, scroll down and save.

Making hidden items visible

Most template items are set to be hidden from students. These items are labeled accordingly. To make a hidden item visible, click on the 3 dots to the right of an item and select Availability>Show on course page.

Note: Setting individual items to be visible to students does not impact course visibility.  Your course will not be accessible by students until you change the course visibility setting explained in the next step.

Upload additional course content

Once you have customized the template items, you can populate your course site as you normally would by uploading content or importing it from a previously used Moodle course.

Make course visible

By default, Moodle courses are invisible to students ot give you a chance to set up your course.  When you're done making edits, make your course visible.

Email your class

You can let the students know the course is ready by using the Announcements forum to send the class a message.  A message will be sent to the Manhattan College email account of all students enrolled in the class.  The announcement will also be visible by clicking on the Announcements forum itself.
