Template User Guide

Updated on

The Course Template includes a variety of premade elements you can customize to organize your course, along with tips and reminders for using Moodle. This tutorial outlines the steps to import the template into your course and update it to prepare your Moodle site for students.

Preview the template

You can preview the course template to see what it includes before importing it. In addition to course elements, the template provides tips, resources, and suggestions for using Moodle effectively. You may choose to use the template directly in your Moodle course or simply as a reference.

Import the template

To import the template, navigate to the course site that you would like to copy the template content to. Follow the steps for performing a course import.  When prompted to select a course for import, enter CourseTemplate_2025 into the search field and select it from the resulting list.

About the template

Review the template content to learn more about using Moodle and to identify any customizations needed for your course. Many items in the template are initially hidden to ensure that all content is reviewed and updated before being made visible to students. Follow the instructions provided in the green text boxes to prepare your course for students. These text boxes are visible only to you as the instructor and can be deleted once they are no longer needed.

Getting started with customizing your course

To begin customizing the template and adding content to your course, first turn editing on. To do this, click the Edit mode toggle in the upper right corner of the screen.

Edit the course header

Edit the header placeholder text  to reflect your course information and then make it visible to your students. To do this, first turn on Edit Mode and follow the instructions below:

  1. Click the three-dot menu for this text
  2. Choose Edit settings. On the next screen, edit the text and then click the Save changes button. Be sure to include the school name, the course name, your name, and your contact information.
  3. Back on your course page, open the three-dot menu again and choose Availability
  4. From the menu, choose Show on course page to make the text visible to your students

Upload your syllabus

Create your syllabus using the Manhattan University Syllabus Template.  Then upload your syllabus under the Syllabus & Course Information heading to make it easy for students to find. When adding a syllabus, we recommend using PDF format rather than Word or some other format. Using a PDF ensures that students will see the syllabus within their browser, without needing to download it. Upload your syllabus following the instructions in our tutorial on adding files.

Update the "Virtual Communication Space" with a link to a dedicated class Google Meet link. You can generate a single Google Meet URL and reuse it throughout the semester to ensure consistency for you and your students. Follow these directions for creating a Course Google Meet link.

Configure Attendance Module

The Attendance module in Moodle allows you to efficiently track student participation and engagement throughout the semester. This tool helps maintain records, monitor student progress, and identify attendance patterns. Follow these directions for configuring the Attendance Module for your course.

Making hidden items visible

Most template items are set to be hidden from students. These items are labeled accordingly. To make a hidden item visible, click on the 3 dots to the right of an item and select Availability>Show on course page.

Note: Setting individual items to be visible to students does not impact course visibility.  Your course will not be accessible by students until you change the course visibility setting explained in the next step.

Upload additional course content

Once you have customized the template items, you can populate your course site as you normally would by uploading content or importing it from a previously used Moodle course.

Delete template instructions

You can remove instructional components, such as green text boxes, from the template when they are no longer needed.

  1. Click the three-dot menu for an item
  2. Select Delete
  3. Confirm the deletion by clicking the red Delete button in the pop-up message

Note: Template instructions are not visible to students. You can leave them in your course if you find them helpful.

Make course visible

By default, Moodle courses are invisible to students ot give you a chance to set up your course. When you're done making edits, make your course visible.

Email your class

You can let the students know the course is ready by using the Announcements forum to send the class a message.  A message will be sent to the Manhattan College email account of all students enrolled in the class.  The announcement will also be visible by clicking on the Announcements forum itself.
