Grading Assignments in Moodle

Updated on

The Moodle grading interface provides instructors with tools to give rich feedback with their grading.  By taking advantage of marking and comments, instructors can provide feedback that will help their students learn the material better and allow the students to understand the grade they received on an assignment.

Accessing the Grading Interface

  1. From your course page, click the name of the assignment you want to grade
  2. To grade all submissions, click the Grade button on the assignment's page
  3. To grade a particular submission, click the View all submissions button on the assignment's page; then, on the next screen, click the Grade button corresponding to the student whose submission you want to grade

The Grading Interface:  The Annotating Pane and the Grading Pane

The grading interface is split into two panes:  the annotating pane and the grading pane.  The grading pane should look familiar to Moodle users; it's used to enter grading information and feedback for the assignment.  The annotating pane allows instructors to annotate student submissions with comments, drawings, and stamps.  The annotated copy of the submission will be available to the student through Moodle.

The Grading Interface: Changing the view

You'll find three buttons in the lower right corner of the grading interface that you can use to change the view.  The left button hides the annotating pane, the middle button displays both panes (the default view), and the right button hides the grading pane.  If you ever open Moodle and find one of the panes "missing," check to see if one of the panes has been hidden.

The Grading Pane

The grading pane is the same as previous versions of Moodle.  This pane provides the following field in which to enter information for students:

  • Grade out of... indicates the maximum points available for the assignment (100, in this example) and has a field in which to enter the number of points for each student
  • Feedback comments will be displayed to students in Moodle when they check their grades
  • Feedback files are files that will be available for students to download; many instructors use this function if they have downloaded student assignments and made comments directly on those files, or have longer written comments or remedial information to address problems that students encountered

Annotating Pane:  Toolbar

The toolbar in the annotating pane offers multiple ways to add feedback to students' submissions:

  1. Switch between pages in the document
  2. Display and search within any text comments you've added to the document
  3. Add text comments to the document; select the left button and click in the document to add a comment, and use the right button to select the background color of the comment
  4. Scroll through the document by selecting the hand icon and dragging; select an annotation with the arrow button and you can move or delete the selected annotation
  5. Draw on the document using freehand lines, straight lines, rectangles, and circles
  6. Highlight text
  7. Choose the color for the lines, shapes, and highlighting
  8. Add "stamps" to the document (e.g., X-marks, checks, smileys); select the left button and click in the document to add a stamp, and use the right button to select which stamp will be added

Annotating Pane:  Comments

The grading interface allows you to define a "quicklist" of comments so that you can reuse comments without needing to type them again:

  1. Click the icon in the upper right corner of the comment you want to reuse
  2. Select "Add to quicklist" from the menu that appears
  3. When you create a new comment, click the same icon and you'll see your previously-saved text available; click on it to insert the text into your newly-created comment.  You can delete a comment from your quicklist by clicking the "X" next to it

Saving and going to the next student

When you're done entering the grade, comments, and any annotations for a student:

  1. Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes and remain on this student's record; or click the Save and show next to move to the next student.  Note that, by default, a student will receive a notification when you save the grading information for his or her assignment.  You can uncheck the Notify students box to change this behavior.  The Reset button located here will erase any grading information you've entered but will not affect annotations you've made.
  2. Click the right arrow in the upper right corner of the screen to go to the next student.  You can also switch to another student with the Change user drop-down menu.
  3. When you're done entering grading information to all students, return to your course page by clicking your course name in the upper left corner of the screen.  Clicking the name of the assignment will bring to you the page for the assignment, and clicking the gear will bring you to the settings page for the assignment.
