The Moodle Dashboard

Updated on

This tutorial will help you navigate the Moodle Dashboard. You'll learn how to organize and navigate to courses, track assignments and deadlines, and customize your dashboard layout.

Course Overview Block

The Course Overview block is the centerpiece of your Moodle Dashboard.  It makes finding your courses easy and offers flexibility in how to display your courses.

Course Overview Display Options

The Course Overview block can be configured in a variety of ways to make it easy for you to locate your courses in the way that works best for you.

Default view

By default, the Course overview block will display all courses that you are enrolled in, other than the ones that you have explicitly hidden (see below).

Want to display your current courses?

Click the filter menu and choose In progress.  Note that you also have the option to view future or past courses.  If a semester is more than two weeks in the future, you will need to click Future to find the course you're looking for.  Similarly, if a semester just ended you will find the course by clicking Past.

Want to choose exactly which courses appear on your dashboard?

You have the option of "starring" certain courses and then setting the dashboard to only display your starred courses.  To star a course, click the three dots next to its name and choose Star this course.  Once you've starred all the courses you want to, click the filter menu and choose Starred to display only the courses you've starred.

Want to prevent certain courses from appearing on your dashboard?

You have the option to hide a course from your dashboard view.  Note that this is completely separate from making a course visible or invisible, which is something an instructor does through a course's settings page.  Hiding a course on your dashboard only affects how it is displayed on your personal dashboard.  To hide a course on from your dashboard, click the three dots next to its name and choose Hide from view.  If you ever want to see a list of the courses you've hidden from your dashboard, click the filter menu and choose Hidden.

Recently Accessed Courses Block

The Recently Accessed Courses block displays the last three courses that you have visited. Use the arrows in the upper right corner of the block to access additional recently accessed courses.

The Timeline Block

The Timeline block lists upcoming activities for students and instructors.  It helps students keep on top of their assignments and instructors keep on top of their grading.

By default, it is located on the right side of the Dashboard within the Block Drawer. If this area is hidden, click on the green tab at the right upper corner of the main screen to make it visible.

When creating an assignment, instructors can set a due date and a "remind me to grade by" date.  For students, that assignment will appear on their timeline leading up to the due date.  For the instructor, that assignment will appear on his or her timeline on the "remind me to grade by" date.

By clicking the time menu, you can choose how far in the future the Timeline block extends, or you can choose to display overdue activities.

The Calendar Block

The Calendar block lists upcoming activities for students and instructors in a calendar format. Like the Timeline block, It helps students and instructors keep track of Moodle deadlines.

By default, it is located on the right side of the Dashboard within the Block Drawer below the Timeline block. If this area is hidden, click on the green tab at the right upper corner of the main screen to make it visible.

Use the arrows to advance forward and backward through the calendar. Dates with associated Moodle deadlines will contain a small dot. Hover over a date to view tasks for that date.

Customizing Your Dashboard

Click the Edit mode toggle in the upper-right corner of the page to change the layout of your dashboard.  While in editing mode, an Add a block button will appear at the top of the main screen as well as at the top of the block drawer.  Click this button and select a block option to add a block to either of these areas.
