Submitting Assignments in Moodle

Updated on

Your instructor may require you to submit your assignments using Moodle. To submit your assignment online, follow these instructions.

1. Locate the assignment

Login to your Moodle course and find the current assignment to be submitted. Click on the assignment name to view the assignment.  In this example, we'll submit a file to the Final Research Paper assignment.

2. Begin submission process

You will see the due date for the assignment following by instructions for completing the assignment as well as additional attachment files that your instructor has added, if any. If your instructor requires you to submit the assignment in Moodle, you will see the Add submission button. Click on this button to submit your assignment. If you do not see the button, you will hand in your assignment according to whatever directions your instructor provides.

File Upload Assignments

Many assignments require you to complete the assignment on your computer and then upload the file to Moodle.  This section provides instructions for uploading an assignment file submission.

Choose an upload method

There are two methods for uploading a file to Moodle:

  1. Click the button in the upper-left corner of the window.  Doing so will give you the option to choose a file to upload.  Go to Step 4 for more information on that process.
  2. Drag and drop a file from your computer.  Note that this may not work with all web browsers.  If you have trouble, try the method described above.  Skip to Step 5 if you use this method.

Choose a file to upload

  1. On the screen that appears, click the Choose File button
  2. A file picker window will come up.  Navigate to the folder on your computer where the file is located, highlight the file, and click the Open button
  3. After the file picker window closes, click the Upload this file button

Save your submission

When you see that your file has been uploaded, click the Save changes button to complete the submission process.

Text Input Assignments (including hyperlinks)

Some assignments require that you enter text directly into Moodle using a text editor.  You may be required to type your response in Moodle or paste a link to content you have created elsewhere.  This section provides instructions for submitting a text entry assignment.

Enter content using the rich text editor

  1. Text can be typed directly into the text field.  The toolbar includes a variety of options for formatting text.
  2. The link button can be used to enter hyperlinks from Google Docs and other shareable content.
Multimedia Assignments (Images, Audio Recordings, and Video Recordings)

You also have the option to enter a variety of multimedia content types.  Clicking on each of the multimedia icons will open a pop-up window to enter content of that type.  Once entered, this content will display in the textbox:

  1. Images
  2. Recorded audio
  3. Recorded video
Image Submissions
  1. If the image is stored somewhere on the web, you can enter the URL for the image in the textbox provided.
  2. More commonly, you will upload an image from your device.  Click Browse repositories and follow the prompts to upload an image file from your device.
Recorded Audio
  1. If prompted, click the Allow button to give permission for Moodle to access your microphone
  2. Click Start Recording to begin recording your audio
  3. A timer will display showing how long your recording is and how much time remains within the maximum recording time. Click Stop recording to end the recording
  4. If you are happy with your recording, click Attach recording.  If you want to delete your recording and start over, click Record again
  5. Your recording will display as a media player in the text editor
Recorded Video
  1. If prompted, click the Allow button to give permission for Moodle to access your camera
  2. Click Start Recording to begin recording your video
  3. A timer will display showing how long your recording is and how much time remains within the maximum recording time. Click Stop recording to end the recording
  4. If you are happy with your recording, click Attach recording.  If you want to delete your recording and start over, click Record again
  5. Your video will display in the text editor

Save submission

Once you have finished entering any text, links, or multimedia content, click on Save changes to save your submissions.

3. Your submission is complete!

When you return to the assignment page, you'll see information about your submission.  When your instructor has completed grading the assignment, you can return to the assignment page to review information about your grade.

Until the due date for the assignment, you have the option to replace the file or text you submitted.  To do that, click the Edit submission button on the assignment page, and follow the same steps you followed for the original submission.  When the due date passes, your most recent submission becomes your final submission.  Note that your instructor may disable the option to upload revised submissions.
